Promising news for mobile game makers today, as mobile analytics firm Flurry reports that, for the first time ever, people in the U.S. now spend more time staring at their mobile devices than whatever’s on television. According to the Flurry report, the average time Americans spend using their mobile devices has risen 9.3 percent in the past nine months to 177 minutes a day, surpassing the average of 168 minutes a day that Americans spent watching TV in 2013 (according to a U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics report.) While this figure is remarkable, it doesn’t necessarily suggest that people are spending any more time per day playing games on their mobile devices — the Flurry report includes any time spent on mobile apps, including entertainment apps like Netflix. However, the ESA published a report in September stating that one-third of Americans aged 13 and up are now playing games on mobile devices, and Flurry itself recently noted that — at least when it comes to Android — Americans spend more of their average day playing mobile games than anyone in the world.
