Commodore released the first Amiga computer on July 23, 1985, and that makes the platform 30 years old, today. Though the system did not catch on in North America, it was extremely popular in Europe — thanks to its great graphics and audio capabilities, GUI interface, and library of excellent games.

Another fun, if tangential, Amiga fact: Electronic Arts also credits aggressively supporting the platform with giving it a leg-up against the competition, too — its similarities to Sega’s Genesis meant that the company could go all-in on that platform when it took off in the U.S.
The company celebrated its history with the platform this week by making the source code to its indispensible Deluxe Paint for Amiga free to download.
